Practical Project Management
Irene Wright & Kevin Quinn

This one-day course will develop and enhance the knowledge, skills and competencies of individuals who are charged with the task of successfully managing either a simple or complex project from initiation and planning to implementation and evaluation. This is a highly interactive day, and those who bring and discuss project management experiences benefit most. Work is done is small groups simulating a project team. Each team discusses an actual project volunteered by one of the participants.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the critical success factors for successful Project Management
  • Define a project using a Project Charter
  • Utilize a 4-Step Project Management Cycle to help successfully achieve objectives of the Project Charter
  • Learn key tools such as the Work Breakdown Structure, the Task and Resource Estimator, the Gantt Chart, the PERT chart, and the Project Health Checklist
  • Define stakeholder needs, interests and wants and create communications tuned to their different needs
  • Understand the role and competencies of a project manager
  • Monitor the project and make the necessary modifications
  • Evaluate the project on completion to measure outcomes and to support learning

Instructors: Irene Wright and Kevin Quinn

Irene Wright, MEd, is the Senior Development Manager, within Organization and Employee Development, Human Resources at the University Health Network in Toronto. Irene consults with individuals and teams to assist with performance management, team effectiveness, management development, patient education and organizational effectiveness. She also led the implementation of the Computer User Support Strategy, which resulted in the creation of a new program designed to improve staff and clinician computer competency levels on clinical and business systems.  Previously, Irene was the Director, Development and Education in Shared Information Management Services for seven years. In this capacity, she managed computer education, various information management projects, helped create the Project Management Office and developed the project management education program for staff and management.

Kevin Quinn is senior human resources consultant. For 25 years he has been assisting individuals, teams and organizations achieve business results through providing advice, coaching, and custom performance improvement programs. His client list includes blue chip firms such as: Rogers Cable Systems, CIBC NavCanada, and Thomas Cook Financial. Kevin's interests include: Educating the reflective practitioner (teaching "smart people" how to learn - especially from their mistakes); Design & leader training of customized corporate learning programs; Leadership and executive team development through coaching and Effectiveness in delivering tough messages through the vocabulary of influence. Kevin also teaches sailing and ballroom dancing.
