Interlibrary Loans for the Small Canadian Health Sciences Library
Tom Flemming & Sue McGillivray
Monday May 30, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm
Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, University Health Network

This half-day course is directed at staff working in small libraries in Canadian hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, law offices and colleges where, because the collection is limited, resource sharing is of great importance in providing staff of the institution with material they need to do their work.

Participants in this course will come away with an understanding of the philosophical underpinnings and policies of resource sharing.  The course will focus on practicalities while surveying the array of services and software used by Canadian libraries of all sizes to improve their fill rates and satisfy patron demand quickly. Free tools and services (such as AMICUS) will be emphasized but the course will also introduce DOCLINE, services from CISTI and other tips and tools of the ILL trade.

The instructors will use didactic methods (lecture-demonstration) and involve participants in ways that will allow them to share their experience and to ask questions. Printed course materials will be provided.

Instructors: Tom Flemming and Sue McGillivray

Tom Flemming is Head of Public Services in the McMaster University Health Sciences Library in Hamilton, ON. He has been at McMaster since 1984; prior to that, he held various positions in the W.K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, and even taught high school for a couple of years. Tom has almost thirty years of experience in the field of health sciences libraries and information delivery in Canada. He holds an MA in English Literature and a Masters in Library Service (MLS) from Dalhousie University, and is a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals. Tom is an active participant in both the Canadian Health Libraries Association and the Medical Library Association. He has published in the library literature, devised and taught CE courses and regularly provides service to library patrons. He is also the creator of the "Health Care Information Resources" web page (http://hsl.mcmaster.ca/tomflem/top.html) which is widely consulted by web surfers looking for health and patient care information.

Sue McGillivray is Project Manager of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) ILL system implementation: RACER. She has been working on the RACER project since 2002. Before the move to ILL, Sue worked in the health information field as the Assistant Executive Director of the Health Science Information Consortium of Toronto, and as Metadata Developer and Workflow Coordinator for the Canadian Health Network (CHN). In addition to developing the training syllabus for the new ILL system in use throughout Ontario academic libraries, Sue has acted as a staff trainer in most of the positions she has held in both library and non-library settings. Sue was the Continuing Education Chair for the 2002 CHLA/ABSC Conference held in Kitchener-Waterloo, and often speaks at OCUL workshops. She has a MLIS from the University of Western Ontario.
