Powerful expression for leaders workshop: the leader's voice

9:30 am - 4:00 pm

*Banff Centre*

CHLA/ABSC 2011 is extending its early-bird rates for the CE session in Banff and spots are available until May 13. We encourage you to register. Why is this leadership session special? From a former attendee and current librarian:

"The Banff Leadership Centre provides an all-encompassing experience that doesn't teach one the latest trends on how to be a better manager or leader; the center creates an environment that allows participants to recognize and build on the many strengths we bring to our work, and our lives in general."

Course Description:

In a leadership context both knowledge and experience are not enough to meet the leadership challenges of today. Besides being a competent leader, individuals must know how to demonstrate and communicate their leadership attributes. Engaging in “Powerful Expression” as a leader is an excellent way to inspire and lead others into action.

The workshop is designed to expand physical, intellectual, and emotional range to develop a more powerful and authentic means of communication and self-expression. Through the use of artistic processes participants will have the opportunity to deepen self-understanding and self-expression as leaders.

A focus of the workshop will be on the specifics of our voice, with special emphasis on the cultivation of the “authentic” voice. Complementing this will be an exploration and link to the critical connections between voice and good listening. Participants will explore and learn how to use their voice to inspire others.

Return on experience:

On completion of the workshop participants will:

  • Develop a more dynamic physical and vocal presence
  • Increase their range of vocal expression and flexibility
  • Align intentions with authentic voice
  • Increase confidence in communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Enhance their leadership effectiveness by building strong interpersonal and communication skills

Planning & delivering an effective workshop

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Neilson 2

In this session, participants will have the opportunity to plan a short workshop by implementing Instructional Design processes. Using a hands-on approach, we will look at identifying goals for the session, organizing learning activities, and evaluating the effectiveness of a session. The workshop will conclude with some basic principles on conducting an effective teaching session.

Transforming data into statistics

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

University of Calgary, MacKimmie Library, IC-A

Peter Peller

Searching for specific health statistics can be a challenge and frequently the numbers needed have simply not been published. There is an alternative to this dilemma. This hands-on workshop will introduce the participant to the techniques of using raw data to create health statistics from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS)*. This biennial survey is the largest health survey in Canada and is a valuable source of health data at the national, provincial and health region levels. Participants will become familiar with the content of the CCHS; the difference between data and statistics; and, working with statistical software to extract data and create statistics. Open source statistical software will be used for the exercises. No familiarity with statistics or statistical software is required.

*CCHS data files are available for free to all researchers working for non-profit organizations in the health field. Academic users have free access through the Data Liberation Initiative program.

Supporting Evidence-Based Clinical Practice: Appraising Therapy Studies

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Hyatt, Neilson 2

Jeff Mason

This half day course is designed for medical librarians who want to learn evidence-based concepts in order to comfortably support and teach evidence-based clinical practice at their institution. Through large and small group discussion, and hands-on, case-based learning you'll learn the skills you need to critically appraise therapy studies.

Assessing user needs: contributions from social research methods

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Hyatt, Neilson 1

In this session, we will provide a practical introduction to methods that health science librarians may use for assessing the needs of their current and potential patrons. Techniques will include questionnaires, exploitation of existing data, participant observation, and interviews (individual and focus group). Participants who are currently or plan to be involved in user needs assessment are encouraged to bring existing or draft tools to the session. To the extent possible, the session will be adapted to participants’ priorities.

How to Teach Evidence Based Clinical Practice: a workshop for librarians because articles do not “fall from heaven” and expert searchers are made not born

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Neilson 1

This course will provide examples of proven teaching strategies for conveying content about evidence based practice. Participants will practice giving feedback and learn how to match teaching strategies useful for large group lectures, small groups, and short sound bite opportunities to their own real world teaching needs. The session will include discussion of roles for librarians associated with EBP, practitioners' information needs for EBP and realistic ways to meet them at point of care and what to do when information just seems to fall from heaven. This course is about how to teach EBP; it is not a course on EBP. Participants should be familiar with basic EBP concepts.
