Interest Groups

Mentorship Group
Brooke Ballantyne Scott

If you're currently a member of the Mentorship Interest Group, interested in possibly becoming a member, or just interested in mentorship in general please join us for a discussion during the Interest Group hour at the CHLA/ABSC conference. We will be chatting about what the future holds for our services and resources in University, Hospital and Special Health Libraries. What types of demands are your users making, and are they achievable? Are we prepared to remain "relevant" ten or fifteen years from now? What skills will we need to develop and support for the future? Are there things we should be concerned about regarding the outlook for medical librarians and library technicians? How can we support each other better as the world of medical libraries adapts and changes?

Social Media Portal
Laurie Blanchard

The use of social media within CHLA/ABSC has risen over the past few years. We know there are many health librarians who are using social media in new and innovative ways. The proposed CHLA/ABSC Social Media Portal is a first step in developing a useful way to share this work and benefit from these experiences. The portal will help health librarians examine the possibilities and the issues associated with using social media in their settings, and provide an opportunity to network and share ideas, initiatives, evaluation tools and techniques. This session will be an opportunity for CHLA/ABSC who have indicated interest in participating in the project to meet in-person, and discuss: possible roles to play in the development of the portal, portal design, and future steps.

Leadership
Jennifer McKinnell

Please join me in welcoming the CHLA/ABSC Leadership Special Interest Group (SIG) back to our Annual Conference. After four years since the inaugural meeting, it's time to review our goals and plan for the future.

Over the past several years, I have watched experienced leaders retire or leave our organization, resulting in a tremendous loss of knowledge and expertise. The Leadership SIG is well poised to address this very issue. I look forward to reopening the discussion, setting new priorities, discovering new opportunities and learning from the experiences of our colleagues.

Value of Libraries Study
Joan Bartlett

This interest group meeting is to discuss the plans for a Canadian replicate of Joanne Marshall's 2009 Value of Libraries Study (presented at the 2011 conference). The research will focus on the value of hospital library and information services, and their impact on patient care outcomes. Funding has recently become available to support a pilot study; anyone interested in participating in the pilot study and/or working on a funding application for a full scale study are invited to attend. If you participated in the original study, or were part of the planning process, please come to share your experience and insights.
