Image and Presence Building

Did you know there are only 14 certified image consultants in Canada?  Did you know one of them was giving a Continuing Education session at CHLA/ABSC?   Yes, Catherine Bell, who you may have seen quoted on image issues in the paper (she's been quoted a lot, look it up!), will be delivering TWO sessions!  This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get training on how to look your professional best from someone who knows a lot about the subject.

Librarians and Patient Safety

You've probably heard of Lorri Zipperer, so I'm thrilled she's coming to deliver this continuing education session at CHLA/ABSC 2010.  She's delivered similar sessions on the topic of the librarian's role in patient safety for SLA.  She was a founding staff member of the National Patient Safety Foundation as the information project manager. She currently serves as the Cybrarian for AHRQ’s Patient Safety Net. She was published in the Quality and Safety in Health Care (ISSN 1475-3898) on opportunities for librarians to partner with clinicians to improve patient safety.

We're looking forward to seeing you in Kingston in June!

New course accredited!

I am pleased to announce that CHLA/ABSC has recently accredited a new CE course:

"Supporting Evidence-Based Clinical Practice: Appraising Therapy Studies"

This half-day course is designed for medical librarians who want to learn evidence-based concepts in order to comfortably support and teach evidence-based clinical practice at their institution. Through large and small group discussion, and hands-on, case-based learning, you'll learn the skill you need to critically appraise therapy studies.

Government Documents and Patents

One of my fave patrons is an ankle surgeon.  He needed to know some pretty detailed information about a particular artificial ankle joint and I would have been completely lost without my colleagues Jeff Moon and Michael White.  They helped me sort through the maze of government documents and patents!  From the approval process for new drugs and health technologies, to the world of statistics, to patents, government information is key to my job.  Thankfully, this continuing education session will make finding government information easier.  This hands-on interactive

What's in your teaching backpack?

I have to teach in my job, mostly nursing students, but lots of other people too, including med students, administrators at the hospital and more.  And teaching can be very intimidating, especially in large lecture halls!  So I can't wait to learn some new teaching tips from Shiela Pinchin.  I know Shiela from my work at Queen's, where she is an Educational Developer in the Office of Health Sciences Education.  She has worked in education since 1980, as a teacher in intermediate and senior divisions, and a curriculum consultant, as well as with the Ontario Ministry of Ed

Fuzzy on Copyright?

Are you a little fuzzy on copyright?  I am!  Nothing causes me to freeze quite so dramatically as a copyright question at the ref desk.  It is as if they are looking to me as some kind of authority!?!?  So I'm really pleased Jean Dryden is coming to deliver a CE session at CHLA to help me sort it all out.  I took a few courses from Jean back when I was in library school, so I have a lot of confidence in her ability to deliver a good class.  Her expertise in copyright has been developed during her experience as an archivist, a consultant, and scholar.

Oral histories are a unique way of sharing the knowledge, experience, and motivation of individuals.  They convey the life and times of those who have contributed to the history of librarianship, medicine, science, and even our personal family histories.

Lower prices for CE sessions!

So, obviously, because I'm chairing the CE committee at CHLA/ABSC 2010, I'm pretty excited about the continuing education sessions for our upcoming conference.  But one of the things I'm most thrilled about is the chance to introduce what I like to call 'recession pricing'!
