Beyond the Basics: Assisting the Informed Patient
Speaker
Julia Harrington
Julia Harrington is a Masters of Library and Information Science student at the Western University. She is the current webmaster of the Ontario Health Libraries Association and was Co-op Librarian for the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region during the summer of 2011. Before pursuing her Masters degree, she volunteered extensively as an information and help desk clerk with the Homewood Health Centre Staff and Patient Libraries. Until the end of April, she will be Co-op placement Librarian for the Kingston Frontenac Public Library, where she works in web development as well as adult services, programming, and collections.
Abstract
Health Information Professionals take great care in providing consumers with 'patient-friendly' health information. But what about those patients who seek more advanced information? Through the course of this session, Julia will examine the information seeking behavior and needs of the informed patient. She will conclude with some strategies for assisting patients for whom traditional consumer health resources are seen as too basic and professional medical literature may be too advanced.
