Lavern Gravis

Lavern Gravis is a Registered Nurse and currently works as a Patient Education Coordinator at the Toronto General Hospital Patient and Family Library and presently is enrolled in the Library Information Technician program.
The Patient Education Coordinator position at the TGH Patient & Family Library involves the leadership and facilitation of the general functioning of the library and the supervision of its volunteers. Lavern Gravis is also the editor of the library’s monthly newsletter.
Lavern previously held the position of:
- Nursing manager at the Fox Earth Nursing Home
- Nursing manager at the White Light Hospice
- Oncology nurse, working on various nursing units at the Princess Margaret Hospital
- Owner and proprietor of Lavern’s Oncology Nursing Agency
- Team Lead for the 4th phase of the organization for training of the Toronto General Hospital nurses for online “Medication Order Entry” and “Medication Administration Record”.

Carmen Alcalde has over 20 years worth of experience in special libraries. Within the last 10 years she has been in a variety of libraries that focus on consumer health. She is currently working at Humber River Regional Hospital; she is the librarian for the Health Resource Centre and oversees the Language Interpretation Program. In addition, she is an active member of the Health Education Development Working Group, Wellness Committee and the Healthcare Interpretation Network. Originally from Lima, Peru, Mrs. Alcalde is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese language. Carmen currently holds a BA, MLIS, Information Management Certificate and an Art Diploma. At this time she is currently working towards achieving her English-Spanish Interpreter and Translation Certificate and in her spare time she enjoys working in her art studio designing and making sculptures.

Mary Anne Howse has been a librarian for over 15 years with a strong background in consumer health. She is currently Manager of Library Services at Women’s College Hospital where she manages the Health Sciences Library and the Marion Powell Women’s Health Information Centre, the consumer health library. Prior to joining Women’s College Hospital, she was a librarian at the AIDS Committee of Toronto where she developed the 3rd and 4th editions of The Living Guide: Services for People in the Toronto Area Living with HIV or AIDS. Mary Anne also worked for several years as a cataloguer for The Roeher Institute, an advocacy organization for people with intellectual disabilities.
Marg Muir

Marg Muir has over 35 years’ experience in the health care sector coupled with an academic background in nursing, health promotion and library science. She has a strong foundation of work-related experience in proposal writing, community development, volunteer management and consumer health in government, hospital and in communities across Canada including Canada’s North . Presently, she is working at Trillium Health Centre in the areas of consumer health and health promotion and at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in consumer health information.
