CHLA/ABSC recommendations for inclusion in Accreditation Canada’s Effective Organizational Standards:

  1. Add Librarian or Library Staff to the list of interdisciplinary team members in the standards.

  2. Revise 15.1 in Measuring Quality and Achieving Outcomes to read: The team has access to electronic/print databases, books or journals to provide evidence-based guidelines for [the clinical area] through the service of the professional library staff.

  3. Refer to the 2006 Standards for Libraries and Information Services in Canadian Healthcare Facilities in the guideline section for 15.5 and adopt the following language for that section:
The organization provides its staff and service providers with 24x7 access to library and information services for research-based evidence and best practice. Information services include print and electronic resources, training and document delivery and are managed by a professional librarian.

2008

CHLA/ABSC is very pleased to announce that the new Version 2 Accreditation Canada (fomerly CCHSA) standards published in May 2008 now include reference to libraries and the use of up to date evidence-based databases.

The standards are unfortunately only available through the Organizational Portal. Libraries should contact their Accreditation Coordinator for access to the standards which are on the portal. Version 3 will be released sometime in 2009. CHLA/ABSC will continue to work to promote libraries with Accreditation Canada. Not all the changes recommended by CHLA/ABSC in their letter to Accreditation Canada have been incorporated.

2001-2003

This is a very important milestone for Canadian Hospital libraries. Thanks to Jean Maragno for her persistence and her great persuasiveness. Having Libraries explicitly mentioned in the Accreditation documents is essential to hospital libraries remaining at the forefront of knowledge exchange in Canadian institutions.
Excellent job!
